Birger Dahl (1916 – 1998) was a pioneer in Scandinavian lighting design. He studied at the Norwegian National School of Art before going on to work as Head of Design at the Norwegian electronics firm Sønnico. During the 1950s Dahl adapted and evolved his work, creating his signature style. It was while he was with Sønnico that Dahl created the Dokka light which went on to win a Gold Medal award at the Triennale di Milano – becoming the first lamp in Norway to receive the prestigious award.
Birger Dahl is considered one of Norway's leading post-war interior designers. He focused on geometric forms that he softened with elegant curves. Dahl became known for his uncluttered, clean designs that were free from layers of ornamentation. It is because of these sleek profiles that his designs still appear modern today, blending seamlessly into contemporary interiors.
To celebrate the centenary of Dahl’s birth, Northern has relaunched his popular Dahl Pendant, meaning that is is available once more to collectors of classic Nordic design.
