The Arame Collection is inspired by geometric forms found in the natural world around us. Designer Tom Raffield named the collection after a complex formation of seaweed, mirroring the kaleidoscopic patterns in the shades. This pattern is achieved by steam-bending wood, a process best known for shaping the hull of a ship. Although not typically used in large commercial processes, Tom Raffield is known for their intricate steam-bent wooden pieces. This ancient skill allows for a low-waste, ecological method of manipulating wood which is free from any glue. An expert team handcrafts each piece from their studio in Cornwall, England.
The Arame Collection, which includes a wall light and a pendant, is available in Ash or Walnut. The contrast in colours creates a striking display when installed together. When illuminated, the lighter ash finish produces a bright glow, while the walnut finish turns a rich, golden colour. Tom Raffield carefully selects woods that are best for steam-bending and finds that hardwoods generally yield better results, reducing the risk of any breakage or snapping. The organic aesthetic of the Arame complements cafes and bars with wooden cladding or natural décor. In the home, it can be used to add a transfixing glow and cosy ambience perfectly suited for bedrooms, a lounge, or a living room.
