Tom Chung is an industrial designer based in Rotterdam, born and raised in Vancouver; it was here that he saw a common attitude towards design, people only desired products that were practical, without unnecessary additions. And so his approach to design began to form. After moving to Rotterdam in 2019, he says his work has become larger and much more experimental than previous designs.
Chung graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, before going on to establish his own Toronto-based studio in 2016. Chung focuses mainly on interior objects and utilises a unique design process which combines contemporary and industrial styles to create context-driven pieces for domestic, institutional and public environments. Some of his most memorable designs have been for the brand Muuto.
"My interest in design is driven by the human experience of space. My process sources from contemporary culture creating context-driven industrial design with a rooted interest in performance. I apply principles of mobility, lightness and durability focusing on improving the objects shaping our built environment." - Tom Chung
