Tobia Scarpa took his inspiration and work ethic from his father. He graduated in 1957 with a degree in architecture from the Università Iuav di Venezia. After obtaining his degree, Scarpa worked alongside his wife in which they collaborated on some iconic and classic designs that have become timeless over the years. Scarpa strived to inspire and design by engaging in intellectual processes and using materials in a way to reach satisfactory results.
In the 1960s Tobia Scarpa started working with Italian lighting manufacturer,
Flos. In 1966, he designed the
Foglio, a design that to this day remains one of Flos' most successful wall lights. Tobia Scarpa also produced numerous architecture projects, perhaps less well-known than his design work. In addition to villas and palaces, with his wife Afra, he managed the construction of several industrial plants.
"When I was born, my father passed on to me our family name, in some ways foreshadowing my future profession. So, from the time I was a helpless child, I was able to find my craft by emulating my father, following in his footsteps. I don’t know if I’ve done it well because it’s a difficult job, but at the time it seemed easy." - Tobia Scarpa
