Simon Karkov was born in 1932 and studied Architecture at the Danish Academy of Architecture, he has worked for various Architecture firms throughout Denmark. Karkov has been in the design field since the 60's and is best known for his Norm Collection he developed for Normann Copenhagen. This collection resulted in Simon Karkov being awarded the 'Best Item' award at the IMM in Cologne.
Karkov's work is distinctive for its geometric style and structural sensibility. He is inspired by nature when designing, the form of his lights are often noted to resemble origami works - the Norm pendants broadcast the geometric patterns that occur within flowers. Simon Karkov now resides in Turkey, where he has retired but still times time for smaller passion projects.
"When I get an idea I draw a sketch which is then transformed into a model. The model is then adjusted over a period of time until the final prototype can be done. I dream of developing new ways of designing objects through the self-assembly concept. This concept must be able to work on a larger scale and that thought fascinates me." - Simon Karkov
