Sergio Mazza was an Italian designer, born in Milan in 1931 he went on to study Architecture in Lausanne. Upon completing his studies he opened his own design studio in 1955, where he focused on furniture and industrial design. Exploring the contrasts between shapes and textures, creating architecturally interesting designs.
In 1960, Sergio Mazza banded together with engineer and designer Ernesto Gismondi to co-found Artemide. Their goal was to produce timeless and technically-innovative products, and Mazza's first Artemide lamp he designed was the Alfa Table Lamp - an artistic yet classic lighting solution. Sergio Mazza also went on to work alongside G. Gramigna, together they worked side by side in the Smc study as well as founding the magazine Ottagono. The duo directed this magazine until 1988.
Mazza's most renowned work is his collaborations with Artemide. Over the course of his career, Mazza received many awards including a silver medal for his Appartamento Italiano at Milan’s 10th Triennale exhibition in 1954, and a Compasso d'Oro for the Delta Lamp in 1960.
