Matali Crasset is a French designer, born in Chalons-en-Champagne, France, in 1965. She graduated from Les Ateliers École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle and after spending some time in Milan working as an apprentice for Denis Santachiara, she returned to Paris to work for Philippe Starck. During this period, she became head of the Thompson Multimedia Research Centre and, later, Tim Thom, Thompson's Design Centre. Shortly after, in 1998 she set up her studio in Belleville, Matali Crasset Productions, and began designing her own work.
The work of Crasset is research-driven and she creates designs by observing the world around us through new eyes, questioning the obviousness of codes that control our daily lives to free ourselves from their bonds. The designer's vision pursues simplification and the search for authenticity.
"My job isn’t about shape. I am most interested in working on the typology of things, on the relationship between the various components of an object while paying attention to the whole, afterwards the form comes, following the tension which I put into all of my designs. - Matali Crasset
