Maria Bernsten is an industrial designer based in Copenhagen who finds inspiration in nature, fashion and architecture. She particularly favours the use of glass in her designs, loving the reflection of light. Bernsten studied architecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and the School of Architecture before opening her own studio in 1992, where she began working as a freelance designer.
Bernsten creates furniture, lighting and objects for daily use - and designs products with nerve, functionality and identity. Over the years, Maria Bernsten has become a well known name in design and has collaborated with a wide range of companies worldwide. She has received numerous awards over the years for her work.
“At the start of a new project, I look for an idea with nerve, functionality and identity. By modelling and visualising, I test the idea, how it might be used, and its presence. Good design communicates and establishes a dialogue with the receiver. Design is not just about functionality – it is as much about the emotional connection and impact. To me, success is when my design brings joy in the everyday lives of people” - Maria Bernsten
