Johan Van Hengel is a Dutch designer, based in Rotterdam. He studied Industrial Product Design at the Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, and his technical background in industrial design assisted him with working on both consumer electronics and furniture before launching his own studio in 2013, where his focus switched to furniture, lighting and living accessories.
Van Hengel redefines form, materials and production techniques to create products with a focus on functionality. He is a problem solver by both nature and training. His logical and investigative approach is driven by a desire to enrich everyday objects with new layers of sophistication, individuality and meaning. Van Hengel has worked with numerous brands over the years, but he is best known for his work with Muuto and HAY.
