Jaume Sans was born in Sitges Barcelona and spent most of his childhood in Cuba. During his return to his hometown, he discovered the magazine L Amic de les Arts, one of the periodicals that helped revolutionise the artistic panorama of the 1920s. This magazine piqued his interest in design and against his family's wishes he attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where he met Angel Ferrant, who was to have a profound influence on his work- and in 1933 he graduated. During this time studying, Sans became a prominent member of the Amics de l Art Nou (ADLAN), a group of artists that promoted new arts and organised exhibitions.
In 1935 he showcased his first sculpture with Ramon Marinello and Eudald Serra in the exhibition Tres Esculptors organised by ADLAN at Barcelona's Galeries d Art Catalònia, and the same year he began experimenting with expressing himself through painting. Once the Spanish Civil War broke out design work became sporadic and artistic activities were interrupted. After the end of the war, Jaume Sans began to develop his own product designs, then devoted himself to industrial design, passing on his passion for the discipline to his three children. Sans became a major figure in Catalan surrealism.
