Josep María Tremoleda (J.M. Tremoleda) was born in Barcelona in 1946 and was part of the first graduating class of Design Studies at Barcelona Escola Massana in 1968. His time at university was crucial to his career, specifically in the people he met, and during his time there he became friends with Josep Maria Massana.
Five years after graduating together the duo founded Mobles 114 alongside Marian Ferrer - a furniture store and interior design studio. It was a period of opportunity in Spain, given the far-reaching political, social and cultural changes underway. Mobles 114 was a hub for design and the trio published other designers' work as well as their own projects, in 2001 the studio won the National Design Award. J.M. Tremoleda's work is described as bold and timeless, with functionality as the key aspect of all of his designs.
Together, J.M. Tremoleda and J.M. Massana reinvented Barcelona's interior aesthetics through their unique designs, prestigious enterprise and gracious friendship. They experimented with various themes of design, including shifting away from purely formalistic exercises to create the Tria bookshelf (1978), the Gira table lamp (1978), and the Havana bench (1990).
