Formafantasma is a design duo formed by Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresinis based in a studio in Milan, Italy, and Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Their design process aims to produce something new and original, they do this through experimentation. They elaborate on this by saying 'Experimentation is an integral part of our work- When we begin a project, we don’t necessarily have an idea of where we will end up'. This experimentation encourages the duo to not only experiment with designs and materials but also with human behavior within a space and the environment it creates.
They aim to use their designs to facilitate a deeper understanding of our nature and the nature around us. Formafantasma describes their portfolio as a collection of 'visual language and meticulously researched outcomes'. This can be seen in designs such as the Wireline suspension and Wirering wall light. Both of which create a form as an afterthought, their main priority is the light and shadows that are artistically created.
"Fundamentally we wanted to change the perception of design, change what people think design is, an attitude that belongs to humans that allows them to better shape their environment” - Formafantasma
