Barlas Baylar is an Istanbul-born designer, known for his minimalistic collection of furniture and lighting. He originally studied finance and marketing in London before relocating to New York to pursue design, Baylar combined the two disciplines through dedicated work in design production in New York, prior to founding his own studio, Hudson Furniture, in 2004. Here he continues to source wood and architectural materials around the globe for his latest collection.
Baylar was raised surrounded by art and Eastern philosophies, he notes that he is glad he never studied design academically as it means he was never restricted by boundaries. His work draws inspiration from the Art Deco era and takes on an organic form thanks to his love for combining natural elements with contemporary aesthetics. A commitment to the preservation of natural beauty informs Baylar's very way of working, he is not a simple admirer of nature, he is deeply devoted to the exclusive use of certifiably sustainable materials.
"I don't design within the boundaries. Functionality isn't my first thought - people are always saying, 'Barlas, don't forget about Mr. Gravity!'" - Barlas Baylar
