Andreas Hansen is a Danish furniture designer born in 1936. He undertook an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker, which he completed in 1957. After this he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts, where he graduated in 1962 before going on to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Furniture Design. While he was studying he travelled to Italy, where he had the opportunity to observe the local architecture, allowing it to influence his future designs.
In 1963 Andreas Hansen founded his studio, specialising in furniture, lighting, and homeware designs, primarily for Danish manufacturers. In 1968 he returned to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts where he worked as a teacher until 1988. Hansen worked with Le Klint where he designed a series of lampshades. He adapted Le Klint’s pleated shades from the classic straight pleats synonymous with the brand and created zip-zag pleating to create a different effect. Like all of Le Klint’s designs, these shades are all hand folded.
During his career, Andreas Hansen created many notable pieces including the AH 70 and AH 15 sofas that he designed for Nielaus Møbler. These sofas blend form and functionality, perfectly showcasing Hansen’s minimalistic style.
