Secto Design are Finnish furniture and lighting manufacturers that produce handcrafted products from natural wood materials - all designed by architect Seppo Koho. Originally founded by Tuula Juselius, she crossed paths with Seppo Koho in 1995 when Tuula Jusélius was seeking a designer for her company to expand their products. Secto's products at the time were furniture made of innovative glue-laminated wood, and customers who bought furniture from the company complained about not finding suitable lamps to go with the furniture and Tuula Jusélius noticed the same. There simply were no wooden lamps on the market. Upon Juselius and Koho meeting to discuss this issue they knew they were kindred spirits: the two share a respect for Northern wood as well as Scandinavian design. So Seppo Koho received a commission, and the result was the Secto 4200 pendant lamp that is still the backbone of the collection.
Birch is the national tree of Finland and a perfect material choice for the Secto collections, Birch used for the Secto Design lamps grows in PEFC-certified commercial forests in Finland. The PEFC certification guarantees ecologically and socially sustainable forestry. This means that aspects like biodiversity, forest health, the well-being of the workers and the cultural value of the forests are taken into account.
