The Legacy of Artemide
Founded in 1960 by Ernesto Gismondi and based in Milan, Artemide quickly established itself as a leader in the world of contemporary lighting. Grounded in a design philosophy known as The Human Light, the brand creates lighting that responds to people – balancing aesthetics with function, emotion with innovation.
Collaborating with some of the most renowned designers and architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, Artemide has produced a catalogue of work that is now enshrined in museums and design history alike.
From early icons like Vico Magistretti’s Eclisse to recent architectural systems such as Alphabet of Light, Artemide’s design legacy is both wide-reaching and deeply influential. With countless design awards and a presence in over 100 countries, the brand continues to set the standard in lighting technology and human-centric design.
Design Icons: Artemide’s Most Celebrated Lights
Across its rich history, Artemide has produced countless classics, but a select few stand as icons of industrial design. Below, we spotlight three of the most revered pieces in the Artemide collection.

Artemide Tizio
A revolution in form and function, the Tizio table lamp was designed by Richard Sapper in 1972 and remains one of the most significant lighting designs of the 20th century. It was among the first to incorporate a halogen light source and pioneered a cable-free approach by conducting electricity through its adjustable arms. A system of counterweights ensures balance and fluid movement, enabling users to reposition the light with precision.
With its angular silhouette and technical purity, the Tizio became synonymous with a new era of high-tech design and remains a fixture in design collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Now available in a range of sizes – including the compact Tizio Micro and the adaptable Tizio LED – it continues to evolve while retaining its original architectural clarity.

Artemide Shogun
The Shogun table lamp by Mario Botta exemplifies the sculptural and expressive qualities that define great design. Its striped, cylindrical base supports twin perforated steel diffusers that can be manually adjusted to shape both the direction and intensity of light. This playful manipulation of shadow and geometry gives Shogun a striking presence, turning illumination into an interactive experience.
Botta’s architectural background is evident in every aspect of the design, from its rational forms to its graphic contrasts. A permanent fixture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Twentieth Century Design Collection, the Shogun is more than a lamp – it is a study in light, form, and visual rhythm.

Artemide Tolomeo
When De Lucchi and Fassina set out to reimagine the traditional pantograph desk lamp, the result was Tolomeo – now one of the most recognised and awarded lights in design history. Engineered for balance and flexibility, its spring-assisted arm structure and 360-degree adjustable head offer maximum versatility, whether for task lighting at a desk or ambient lighting in a living space.
Since its release, the Tolomeo has grown into a full collection spanning table, wall, floor, and ceiling lights – each maintaining the same industrial elegance and technical precision. Lightweight, robust, and incredibly adaptable, it’s a modern design classic that continues to find relevance in homes and commercial spaces alike.
