Babel Table Lamp by Santa & Cole

Angel Jove, an urban conspirator and Spanish designer, was among those responsible for the colourful explosion of modern night bars in the late 1970s that became commonplace within the next decade. Jove designed the Babel table lamp as an ode to the incomplete biblical tower where language brought chaos into its construction. In comparison, the Babel lamp is a complete column, perfect and robust, shining with power and made from alabaster.

At the time, the use of alabaster was a provocative choice, as the material was seen as distasteful and with no constructive ability, unlike the qualities found in marble or onyx. Because of this view, alabaster was usually used to create kitsch sculptures found at souvenir shops for tourists. Jove instead sees the beauty in alabaster, creating a spectacular table lamp that produces a warm and mesmerising glow. The amount of craftmanship needed for each Babel light, means that no light is similar to the other and thus each is unique. The table light is also supplied with a dimmable bulb and a dimmer switch on the cable allows you to easily adjust the brightness depending on the time of day or use.
